In heavy traffic or at stoplights the XC40’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The Golf Alltrack doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.
The XC40 has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Golf Alltrack doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.
The Volvo XC40 comes standard with an automatic transmission, for driver comfort, especially in the city. Automatic costs extra on the Golf Alltrack.
An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Volvo XC40, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a six-speed automatic is available for the Golf Alltrack.

For better traction, the XC40 has larger standard tires than the Golf Alltrack (235/55R18 vs. 205/55R17). The XC40’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Golf Alltrack (245/45R20 vs. 225/45R18).
For better ride, handling and brake cooling the XC40 has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the Golf Alltrack. The XC40’s optional 20-inch wheels are larger than the 18-inch wheels optional on the Golf Alltrack.
The XC40 offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Golf Alltrack’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.
The XC40 has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The XC40’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Golf Alltrack doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.
For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the XC40’s wheelbase is 2.9 inches longer than on the Golf Alltrack (106.4 inches vs. 103.5 inches).
For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the XC40 is 2.1 inches wider in the front and 4.3 inches wider in the rear than on the Golf Alltrack.
The XC40 T5 R-Design AWD handles at .85 G’s, while the Golf Alltrack SEL pulls only .84 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.
For greater off-road capability the XC40 has a 1.4 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Golf Alltrack (8.3 vs. 6.9 inches), allowing the XC40 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.
The XC40 is 6 inches shorter than the Golf Alltrack, making the XC40 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.
The XC40 has 3.7 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Golf Alltrack (98 vs. 94.3).
The XC40 has .4 inches more front headroom, .8 inches more front shoulder room, .5 inches more rear headroom, .5 inches more rear legroom and 2.4 inches more rear shoulder room than the Golf Alltrack.
Pressing a switch automatically lowers the XC40’s optional rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Golf Alltrack doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.
A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the XC40. The Golf Alltrack doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.
To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the XC40 has a standard power liftgate, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button, or optionally by just waving your foot, completely leaving your hands free. The Golf Alltrack doesn’t offer a power liftgate.
The XC40 has a 3500 lbs. towing capacity. The Golf Alltrack has no towing capacity.
The XC40 has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Golf Alltrack doesn’t offer a remote starting system.
When three different drivers share the XC40, the memory seats and mirrors make it convenient for all three. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position and outside mirror angle. The Golf Alltrack doesn’t offer a memory system.
The XC40’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The Golf Alltrack has a lever-type parking brake that has to be strenuously raised to engage properly. It has to be lifted up more and a button depressed to release it.
If the windows are left open on the XC40 the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Golf Alltrack can’t use the remote to operate the windows.
Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the XC40 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Golf Alltrack doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.
To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the XC40 has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Golf Alltrack only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.
Consumer Reports rated the XC40’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the Golf Alltrack’s headlights, which were rated “Good.”
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The XC40’s available headlights were rated “Good” by the IIHS, while the Golf Alltrack’s headlights are rated “Poor.”
In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The XC40 offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Golf Alltrack doesn’t offer headlight washers.
When the XC40 with available tilt-down mirrors is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Golf Alltrack’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.
The XC40 offers optional automatic dimming rear and side view mirrors which automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Golf Alltrack offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.
Both the XC40 and the Golf Alltrack offer available heated front seats. The XC40 also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Golf Alltrack.
On extremely cold winter days, the XC40’s optional heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the vehicle heater warms up. The Golf Alltrack doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.
To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Volvo XC40 offers an optional wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. The Golf Alltrack doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.
The XC40 is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Golf Alltrack doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
