Fuel Economy and Range

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Sequoia uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Tahoe with the 6.2 V8 engine requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Toyota Sequoia higher (5 out of 10) than the Chevrolet Tahoe (3). This means the Sequoia produces up to 16.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Tahoe every 15,000 miles.

For better traction, the Sequoia has larger tires than the Tahoe (275/65R18 vs. 265/65R18).

Suspension and Handling

For superior ride and handling, the Toyota Sequoia has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Chevrolet Tahoe has a solid rear axle, with a non-independent rear suspension.

The Sequoia has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Sequoia flat and controlled during cornering. The Tahoe’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Sequoia’s wheelbase is 6 inches longer than on the Tahoe (122 inches vs. 116 inches).

The Sequoia’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (50.4% to 49.6%) than the Tahoe’s (51.6% to 48.4%). This gives the Sequoia more stable handling and braking.

The Sequoia TRD Sport 4x4 handles at .78 G’s, while the Tahoe LT 4x4 pulls only .74 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Sequoia TRD Sport 4x4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1 seconds quicker than the Tahoe Premier 4x4 (27.3 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 28.3 seconds @ .62 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Sequoia’s turning circle is .9 feet tighter than the Tahoe’s (38.1 feet vs. 39 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Sequoia Platinum has a 1.7 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Tahoe (9.6 vs. 7.9 inches), allowing the Sequoia to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Sequoia’s minimum ground clearance is 2.1 inches higher than on the Tahoe (10 vs. 7.9 inches).

Passenger Space

The Sequoia has 1.7 inches more front hip room, 1.6 inches more front shoulder room, 1.9 inches more rear legroom, .5 inches more rear shoulder room, 10.5 inches more third row legroom, 1.1 inches more third row hip room and 3.1 inches more third row shoulder room than the Tahoe.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Sequoia’s middle and third row seats recline. The Tahoe’s third row seats don’t recline.

The Sequoia’s cargo area provides more volume than the Tahoe.

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Sequoia easier. The Sequoia’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 33 inches, while the Tahoe’s liftover is 35.9 inches.

The Sequoia’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the Tahoe’s (7100 vs. 6400 pounds).


If the front windows are left open on the Sequoia the driver can close them at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Tahoe can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Sequoia has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Tahoe doesn’t offer headlight washers.

Economic Advantages

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Sequoia is less expensive to operate than the Tahoe because it costs $464 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Sequoia than the Tahoe, including $59 less for a water pump, $774 less for a muffler, $16 less for front brake pads, $64 less for fuel injection and $242 less for a power steering pump.


Consumer Reports? recommends the Toyota Sequoia, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Chevrolet Tahoe isn't recommended.
