Fuel Economy and Range

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Sequoia uses regular unleaded gasoline. The QX80 requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

Suspension and Handling

The Sequoia offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The QX80’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Sequoia is .4 inches wider in the front and 1.2 inches wider in the rear than on the QX80.

The Sequoia TRD Sport 4x4 handles at .78 G’s, while the QX80 AWD pulls only .71 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Sequoia TRD Sport 4x4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.3 seconds quicker than the QX80 AWD (27.3 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 28.6 seconds @ .57 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Sequoia’s turning circle is 3.2 feet tighter than the QX80’s (38.1 feet vs. 41.3 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Sequoia Platinum has a greater minimum ground clearance than the QX80 (9.6 vs. 9.2 inches), allowing the Sequoia to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Sequoia’s minimum ground clearance is .8 inch higher than on the QX80 (10 vs. 9.2 inches).


The Sequoia is 5.1 inches shorter than the QX80, making the Sequoia easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The Sequoia has 2.9 inches more front legroom, 3.3 inches more front hip room, 2.6 inches more front shoulder room, 1.5 inches more rear hip room, 2.1 inches more rear shoulder room, 6.5 inches more third row legroom, 1.6 inches more third row hip room and 5.2 inches more third row shoulder room than the QX80.

The front step up height for the Sequoia is 1.7 inches lower than the QX80 (21” vs. 22.7”). The Sequoia’s rear step up height is 1.3 inches lower than the QX80’s (22.2” vs. 23.5”).

The Sequoia’s cargo area provides more volume than the QX80.

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Sequoia easier. The Sequoia’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 33 inches, while the QX80’s liftover is 35.8 inches.

The Sequoia’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the liftgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The QX80’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

Servicing Ease

The Sequoia has a maintenance free battery for long life without checking the battery’s water level. The QX80 doesn’t have a maintenance free battery, so the water level in the battery’s cells must be checked often to prevent damage.


Economic Advantages

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Sequoia is less expensive to operate than the QX80 because it costs $264 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Sequoia than the QX80, including $171 less for a muffler, $6 less for front brake pads, $21 less for fuel injection and $989 less for a power steering pump.


Consumer Reports? recommends the Toyota Sequoia, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Infiniti QX80 isn't recommended.
