Fuel Economy and Range

The F-Type 2.0-liter’s standard fuel tank has 3.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the A3 Cabriolet 40 TFSI’s standard fuel tank (16.6 vs. 13.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The F-Type V6/V8’s standard fuel tank has 4 gallons more fuel capacity than the A3 Cabriolet 45 TFSI Quattro’s standard fuel tank (18.5 vs. 14.5 gallons).


An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Jaguar F-Type, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the A3 Cabriolet.

The F-Type’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The A3 Cabriolet doesn’t offer launch control.

The F-Type’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the A3 Cabriolet are solid, not vented.

The F-Type offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The A3 Cabriolet doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the F-Type has larger standard tires than the A3 Cabriolet (F:245/45R18 & R:275/40R18 vs. 225/45R17). The F-Type SVR’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the A3 Cabriolet (F:265/35R20 & R:305/30R20 vs. 235/35R19).

The F-Type’s standard 275/40R18 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the A3 Cabriolet’s standard 45 series tires. The F-Type’s optional 295/30R20 rear tires have a lower 30 series profile than the A3 Cabriolet Premium Plus/Prestige’s optional 35 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the F-Type has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the A3 Cabriolet. The F-Type’s optional 20-inch wheels are larger than the 19-inch wheels optional on the A3 Cabriolet Premium Plus/Prestige.

Suspension and Handling

The F-Type offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The A3 Cabriolet’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The F-Type’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The A3 Cabriolet doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the F-Type is 1.4 inches wider in the front and 4.1 inches wider in the rear than the track on the A3 Cabriolet.

The F-Type R Convertible handles at .96 G’s, while the A3 Cabriolet pulls only .86 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the F-Type’s turning circle is 1.1 feet tighter than the A3 Cabriolet’s (35 feet vs. 36.1 feet).

Passenger Space

The F-Type has 1.8 inches more front legroom and 1.7 inches more front shoulder room than the A3 Cabriolet.

Cargo Capacity

With its convertible body style and remote trunk release lockout, the F-Type offers cargo security. The A3 Cabriolet’s non-lockable folding seat and non-lockable remote release defeat cargo security.

Servicing Ease

The engine in the F-Type is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the A3 Cabriolet. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.


The F-Type Auto has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The A3 Cabriolet doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

When three different drivers share the F-Type, the memory system makes it convenient for all three. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver and front passenger’s seat positions, steering wheel position (with optional power wheel adjuster) and outside mirror angle. The A3 Cabriolet doesn’t offer a memory system.

The F-Type’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The A3 Cabriolet doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The F-Type has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The A3 Cabriolet doesn’t offer headlight washers.

When the F-Type is put in reverse, the passenger rearview mirror tilts from its original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirror into its original position. The A3 Cabriolet’s mirror doesn’t automatically adjust for backing.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the F-Type keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in summer. The A3 Cabriolet doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

On extremely cold winter days, the F-Type’s optional heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The A3 Cabriolet doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

The F-Type R-Dynamic/R/SVR’s optional Park Assist can parallel park by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The A3 Cabriolet doesn’t offer an automated parking system.


The F-Type was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine’s “All Stars” in 2014. The A3 Cabriolet has never been an “All Star.”
