An engine control system that can shut down half of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Pilot’s fuel efficiency. The MKT doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Pilot Touring/Elite/Black Edition’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The MKT doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Honda Pilot uses regular unleaded gasoline. The MKT requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Pilot has almost a gallon more fuel capacity than the MKT (19.5 vs. 18.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

For better traction, the Pilot has larger tires than the MKT (245/60R18 vs. 235/55R19).

The Pilot has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The MKT doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Pilot Elite 4WD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.2 seconds quicker than the MKT (27.5 seconds @ .63 average G’s vs. 28.7 seconds @ .57 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Pilot’s turning circle is 2.1 feet tighter than the MKT AWD’s (39.4 feet vs. 41.5 feet).

The Honda Pilot may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 600 to 900 pounds less than the Lincoln MKT.

The Pilot is 11.1 inches shorter than the MKT, making the Pilot easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Pilot uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The MKT doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The Pilot has 10.6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the MKT (152.9 vs. 142.3).

The Pilot has 3.4 inches more front hip room, 3.4 inches more front shoulder room, 1.2 inches more rear headroom, 1.4 inches more rear hip room, 3.9 inches more rear shoulder room, 5.4 inches more third row headroom, 4 inches more third row hip room and 8.5 inches more third row shoulder room than the MKT.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Pilot’s middle and third row seats recline. The MKT’s third row seats don’t recline.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Pilot Touring/Elite/Black Edition’s liftgate can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The MKT doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

The Pilot’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The MKT’s power mirror switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The Pilot has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent vandalism, such as sugar in the tank and fuel theft. The MKT doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The Pilot’s available headlights were rated “Acceptable” by the IIHS, while the MKT’s headlights are rated “Marginal.”

When the Pilot Touring/Elite/Black Edition is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The MKT’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

The Pilot will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Pilot will retain 47.05% to 51.4% of its original price after five years, while the MKT only retains 35.6% to 42.64%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Honda Pilot will be $5240 to $15947 less than for the Lincoln MKT.
