An engine control system that can shut down half of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Camaro V6/V8 Auto’s fuel efficiency. The 718 Cayman doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Chevrolet Camaro uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended with the 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. engine for maximum performance). The 718 Cayman requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Camaro has 4.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the 718 Cayman’s standard fuel tank (19 vs. 14.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Camaro has 2.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the 718 Cayman’s optional fuel tank (19 vs. 16.9 gallons).

The Camaro has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The 718 Cayman doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Transmission

A 10-speed automatic is available on the Chevrolet Camaro, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the 718 Cayman.

For better traction, the Camaro has larger standard tires than the 718 Cayman (245/50R18 vs. 235/45R18). The Camaro ZL1 1LE Coupe’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the 718 Cayman (F:305/30R19 & R:325/30R19 vs. F:245/35R20 & R:305/30R20).

The Camaro SS 1LE/ZL1’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 30 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 718 Cayman’s optional 35 series front tires.

The Camaro has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The 718 Cayman doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires available on the Camaro can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The 718 Cayman doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Camaro’s wheelbase is 13.3 inches longer than on the 718 Cayman (110.7 inches vs. 97.4 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Camaro is 3.5 inches wider in the front and 2.4 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the 718 Cayman.

The Camaro’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (51.9% to 48.1%) than the 718 Cayman’s (44.7% to 55.3%). This gives the Camaro more stable handling and braking.

The Camaro ZL1 1LE Coupe handles at 1.18 G’s, while the 718 Cayman pulls only 1.00 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Camaro SS Coupe executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the 718 Cayman S (22.9 seconds @ .91 average G’s vs. 23.7 seconds @ .89 average G’s).

Passenger Space

The Camaro has standard seating for 4 passengers; the 718 Cayman can only carry 2.

The Camaro Coupe has 45 cubic feet more passenger volume than the 718 Cayman (93 vs. 48).

Ergonomics

The Camaro Auto has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The 718 Cayman doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Camaro offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and other key instrumentation readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The 718 Cayman doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Camaro has standard extendable sun visors. The 718 Cayman doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Model Availability

The Chevrolet Camaro comes in coupe and convertible bodystyles; the Porsche 718 Cayman isn’t available as a convertible.

Recommendations

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Camaro second among midsize sporty cars in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The 718 Cayman isn’t in the top three.

Motor Trend selected the Camaro as their 2016 Car of the Year. The 718 Cayman has never been chosen.

The Chevrolet Camaro outsold the Porsche Cayman by over 16 to one during 2018.
